Jamal, The Silk Road Exhibition at Benaki Museum Athens

In 2016, Jamal presented “The Silk Road” at the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art in Athens, an exhibition exploring one of history’s most important routes of cultural exchange. The exhibition brought together fifteen works inspired by the legendary Silk Road and its role in connecting Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

For Jamal, the Silk Road is much more than an ancient trade route. It represents the movement of ideas, knowledge, beliefs, science, culture and artistic expression between civilisations. Through his paintings, this history is reinterpreted through a contemporary perspective, creating a visual dialogue between East and West.

The exhibition was characterised by bright colour, strong forms and dreamlike imagery, transforming historical references into a vivid contemporary world. According to the Benaki Museum catalogue, Jamal’s work reflects his fascination with the Silk Road as a meeting point of different cultures and ways of life.

Horses, human figures, symbolic forms and cultural references also play an important role in the collection, reinforcing themes of travel, movement and connection between peoples.

Jamal — The Silk Road was presented at the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art in Athens from 14 January to 14 February 2016, becoming an important chapter in Jamal’s international artistic journey.
